Bangladesh's government has formally signalled an elevation of its institutional engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with the fisheries and agriculture minister confirming at a Dhaka reception that Dhaka has applied for Sectoral Dialogue Partner (SDP) status within the bloc. Speaking at the 59th ASEAN Day observance, Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid positioned ASEAN as a priority vector of the administration's external economic policy, framing the relationship as one anchored in shared geography, historical ties and a calibrated effort to convert bilateral momentum into a more durable multilateral framework.

The minister, attending as chief guest, stated that the government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman accords "the highest importance" to relations with all 11 ASEAN member states and pointed to the prime minister's selection of Malaysia as her first state visit as evidence of that prioritisation — a sequencing decision that carries signalling weight in regional diplomatic calculations.
